The Mechatronics Department is responsible for the promotion of research in the areas of Micromechanics, Materials, Nanomaterials and Nanostructures, Information and Telematic Systems, Robotics and Control Systems, Embedded and Wearable Systems and Sensors, Biomechatronics Technologies, and Microelectromechanical Systems (MEMS). The Thessaly Mechatronics Department is designed to support rapid prototyping of products, education/training in the field of mechatronics technology (with emphasis to non traditional applications), for providing services to the related local industry, support the development of new companies, and promote innovation in industrial activities. To accomplish these objectives, a number of laboratories are supported.
Mechatronic technology has matured significantly and has made major impact in a variety of industries. Examples are the automobile, aero-space, transportation, and appliances manufacturing industries. Some of these products are of mechatronic nature themselves and can be found in office and home appliances, medical devices, production tools, and technology for leisure. Mechatronics is no longer confined in traditional large programs in the aeronautics, space and arms industries. It does not addresses only issues related to manufacturing processes, machine precision, packaging manufacturing and instrumentation. Instead, it has expanded to new application areas such medical engineering (implants and prosthetics), textile industry, aid to disability, agricultural engineering, micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS), machine mobility, multiscale rigid and compliant mechanics, material characterization, optical engineering, environmental engineering, energy systems, human enhancement engineering (wearable technologies) and various other areas where smart products were the subject of designer innovation. The advances in telecommunication, sensors, and computer networks have added a new dimension to mechatronics that has only recently been integrated into product design.
The Mechatronics Department needs to:
- Bring new smart functionality to a product so that its capable to interact and communicate with its environment,
- Realize fast time-to-market and a first-time-right product development, as well as inexpensive maintenance during its life time,
- Improve overall product quality in order to boost significantly the future stakes of mechatronics technology.
